Everyone knows blackcurrant fruits — few know that Smordin (Ribes nigrum) leaves are what concentrate the most valuable active principles of the plant for supporting joint health. Rich in proanthocyanidins, flavonoids, vitamin C, and organic acids, leaves harvested in spring have a long tradition in European phytotherapy for joint comfort and metabolic balance.
At Spițeria Vraciului, young leaves are hand-harvested in May-June, at the time of their highest concentration of active principles, and slowly macerated in quality medicinal alcohol in a 1:3 ratio — a dense extract that preserves the intact synergy between proanthocyanidins, quercetin, and organic acids with natural anti-inflammatory action.
Why leaves, not fruits — and why extract, not tea
- Leaves vs. fruits — Ribes nigrum leaves contain a significantly higher concentration of anti-inflammatory proanthocyanidins and flavonoids than fruits, which are more geared towards simple antioxidants
- Spring harvest — young leaves from May-June have the densest phytochemical profile; mature or dried leaves from commercial sources lose a significant part of their activity
- Hydroalcoholic extraction — lipophilic proanthocyanidins and flavonoids are not fully extracted in hot water; alcohol ensures superior bioavailability compared to regular tea
- Precise 1:3 ratio — the calibrated concentration guarantees consistent effect from one bottle to another, impossible to achieve with bulk plants or non-standard teas
Ribes nigrum leaves contain proanthocyanidins, quercetin, kaempferol, vitamin C, and organic acids with anti-inflammatory, diuretic properties, and supporting uric acid metabolism — a studied and recognized phytochemical profile in European phytotherapy.
Recognized traditional properties of Blackcurrant (Ribes nigrum) leaves
- Proanthocyanidins and flavonoids (quercetin, kaempferol) have recognized anti-inflammatory properties — contributing to the support of joint comfort and the reduction of discomfort associated with joint inflammation
- Recognized diuretic properties in traditional European phytotherapy — contributing to increased diuresis and facilitating the natural elimination of uric acid through urine
- Significant concentration of vitamin C contributes to the normal formation of collagen for the normal functioning of cartilage and bones — EFSA authorized claim
- Powerful antioxidant properties — cellular protection of synovial and cartilaginous tissue against oxidative stress associated with chronic inflammatory processes
- Organic acids contribute to supporting metabolic balance and facilitating the natural elimination of acidic metabolic products
- Traditionally used in Romanian and European folk medicine for supporting joint comfort, normal mobility, and metabolic balance in chronic rheumatic conditions
🦴 Joint Comfort
Recognized natural anti-inflammatory properties — supporting joint comfort and reducing discomfort associated with chronic inflammatory processes.
⚡ Uric Acid and Gout
Increased diuresis and organic acids contribute to facilitating the natural elimination of uric acid, supporting metabolic comfort in episodes of hyperuricemia.
🧬 Cartilage and Collagen
Vitamin C contributes to the normal synthesis of collagen for the normal functioning of cartilage, bones, and joints — EFSA authorized claim.
🛡️ Antioxidant Protection
Proanthocyanidins provide intense antioxidant protection to joint tissue, reducing the impact of oxidative stress on chronically inflamed joints.
💧 Diuresis and Detoxification
Recognized diuretic properties — supporting the natural elimination of metabolic products and toxins by increasing urinary flow.
🦷 Bones and Mineralization
Vitamin C and flavonoids contribute to maintaining normal bone function and supporting normal bone density as part of a balanced nutritional intake.
💧 Method of administration
- 1Add 10–15 drops to a glass with 100 ml of room temperature water
- 2Consume 3 times a day, before meals · Drink a minimum of 1.5–2L water/day during the course
